Welcome to the QBTY blog!

Hello there! We've decided to start a blog to share with everyone all the going-ons here at Quilting by the Yard. We hope that you'll join us as we share with you what's new at the shop, new classes we're offering, quilting tips, etc.

We're a full-service quilting shop in Vernon, Connecticut, filled with almost 5,000 bolts of beautiful fabric from Moda, Bernartex, Timeless Treasures, Andover and much, much more.

Owners Laura and Michelle both offer edge-to-edge and custom long-arm quilting. They quilt all the beautiful quilts that hang in the shop.

Some of the books we have in stock, and the beautiful quilts made by the ladies who work at QBTY.
Moda Island! Home to Moda pre-cuts and lots of yardage.
Nicknamed Bali Alley, this beautiful aisle is where our many, many bolts of batiks reside.

The ladies at QBTY also love to cook and bake, so you'll find a recipe or two on here. To celebrate the arrival of Fall, here's a recipe for delicious Apple Cake!

Apple Cake
6 apples (McIntosh is a favorite)
3 tbsp cinnamon
5 tbsp sugar

3 cups all-purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1/4 cup orange juice
2 1/2 tsp vanilla

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a bundt pan and set aside.
- Peel, cute and chop apples into chunks. Toss with cinnamon and (5 tbsp) sugar, and set aside.
- Sift together flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
- In a separate large mixing bowl, mix oil, orange juice, (2 cups) sugar and vanilla.
- Add the sifted dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, then add eggs, one at a time. Scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl to make sure all the ingredients are well-blended.
- Pour half the batter into the prepared bundt pan. Spread half the apples over it.
- Pour the remaining half of the batter over the apples, and arrange the remaining half of the apples over the batter.
- Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, or until a tester comes out clean.
- Dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar... and enjoy!
